Context of The Berlin Wall

• Conclusion of WW2, Germany was split in two (East and West Germany)
• Western side was assisted by UK and US
• Eastern Side was assisted by Soviet Union
• Berlin was divided into East and West Berlin 
• Many people began escaping from the East side to the West because of the worsening conditions.
• In August 1961, the East Germans ordered that the border between East and West Germany was closed
• This included cutting the city in half and erecting a border between the two.
• First a temporary barbwire fence was put up
• Families were no longer able to visit relatives on the other side
• Some East Berliners were cut off from their jobs on the West Berlin side.
• They then erected a permanent wall made of concrete, which was known The Berlin Wall
• 87 mile long structure, featuring 116 watch towers, dogs, chain link fences, barbwire, and trenches to stop vehicles from driving across, also included a secondary wall on the East Berlin Side
• There were several checkpoints where people would cross, including the famous 'Checkpoint Charlie"
• It stood for 26 years but in the 1980s it started to get criticised, with Ronald Reagan, The President of America, stating 'Tear Down This Wall'
• This caused many Eastern Germans to protest against the wall and knock it down by hand.

What was life like? 

• There was a lot of surveillance, with many people living double lives.
• Poverty was a big problem at this time with people only managing to afford the necessities in life
• People tried to sneak through the wall but they would be very fortunate to succeed

What did young people listen to/do for fun?

• Music was heavily censored in East Germany, as authorities would carefully review lyrics for any hints of dissent, and ban a band if they found any. Bands were also only allowed to sing in German. Needless to say, the youth began clamoring for bands from abroad, and a black market developed of copies of western artists’ music and bootlegs of it.

What was Education like?

• Schools in East Germany were not just educational centres in the narrow sense of the word. Beside regular classes, they also organised ’pioneer afternoons’ with different themes. On some, kids could bring their pets. On others, they would be talking about holidays. They also spent many a pioneer afternoon playing outside in the forest. The pioneer activities served as the first preparation for children to become ’good socialists’. On special occasions like the first of May, they wore scouting-like uniforms that were different for each age group. They remember wearing a white shirt and a blue tie, which belonged to the youngest pioneers. The next higher group, ’Thälmann-pioneers’ had white shirt and red ties.”

Why did people want to escape?

• Regional Inequalities still exist, leaving the East behind the West with higher unemployment and poverty rates, population decline, and scarcity of large companies. Unemployment in the former West Germany is at 5.6%, whereas in the former East Germany it is above 9%.

Was it all bad?

• Many people hadn't done anything in their life that interested the Stasi, many people woke up, went to work, came home, ate, drank, and slept like anybody else.

In the scene where Benny and the social worker are talking, the high angle shot is being used to show Benny is looking down on the social worker, which is ironic as she is the higher participant. All sheets of boys are eye level to show they are equal. when Benny i shot it is a long shot which zooms in to eleven to show her panic.

Editing-
In the scene of Steve and Nancy in her bedroom a jump cut is used to show the proximity between the teenager. As he moves closer the audience are aware f the advances in the romance within their relationship as it blossoms. When the social worker arrives at Benny's diner, the pace of the cuts, along side the intense non-diagetic music creates a overall tense sense of panic as the officials look for eleven.

Mise en scene-
At the Byers house the colours representing a reminiscing scene, with the browns and pastel colours, however the bright yellow contrast the dark colours to show the significance of this prop later on in the episode. At Benny's diner, Benny and Eleven are wearing is relaxed and comfortable clothes compared to the suited government to show significant  of the government. Nancy's room is a typical 80's girl with light and pastel colours to show her innocence  and purity. When Steve enters the room this dark clothes contrast from the light purity showing how he can change the atmosphere.

How are different social groups represented in the sequence you have analysed? What role does the use of media language, signs and signifiers have in constructing and presenting these representations as real? Make a plan, go through the doc link and see what other students wrote for their scenes, take notes.

Multiple social groups have tried to be presented in the first episode of Stranger Things including; youth, parents and political parties. They are all represented through dissimilar ways. For example, media language, signs and signifiers all show them in different ways.

Interpreting different social groups, is the police and government. The government signs are hinted right from the off. Due to the identifiable personal that is dressed in the white lad coat that is stereotyped in most films to show the signs of discovery or unnatural sources. signifying intelligence as it is key to working in a white-collar job like this one. The camera work used creates a direct mode of address that shows us as equal to this scientist to give us a new perception of this scientist. The sounds of his footsteps show the normality of the government as they are still human and scared. The strobe lights indicate the hints of intelligent almost stuttering out of him as the adrenaline takes over creating this “normal” persona. The police are represented complete different to the government. Although they seem lazy and have that dull attitude, they are also secretly compassionate as hopper shows in the woods. Hoppers aura that is created as the way he strokes in late shows the laziness and the that boss has a non-caring attitude that suggest the opposite to the hard-working government. The representation then is given a sense of realism to the audience, as it is typical that the lazy sheriff who ha the most power is the lazy Sheriff as it has been dripped into the media through the cultivation, they through other medias. Camera looks up at hopper from a low angle shot to create this snse of entailment and power given to him just cause of his stature and mood, the producers do this in order to present the social group as having platforms.

Another social group which can be presented in episode one, Is the social groups of youths, there are multiple signs which show that they are teenagers, in the 1980s. The boys are on the bikes which is at first perceived as a sign. However, when I investigate these signs you can see that the boys use on their bikes a lot therefore showing their dependence and signifies their freedom and their trust and relationship with their parents. This further proved as the children can ride home late at night it seems so have trust yet also are used to doing this do so meaning they have been trusted for a while further proving the maturity and responsibility of each youth. So, on a whole this is showing the contrast to what a stereotype of youths are, as the boys are portrayed as intellectual. This is due to the complex game lasting10 hours and the fact they can be trusted to make their way home safely, shows an opposite to the stereotype of youths. Mike see’s this creature he appears to fear this when he runs to his house, therefore portraying the stereotype of a younger teenager who may act brave but is still a child at heart and still needs protection.

With the amount of characters shown on the poster, it shows that there will be multiple story lines. This also suggests that they are the main characters so the audience will be seeing a lot of them and get to know them if they watch the series. - The characters at the top of the poster look scared and are positioned so that it looks like they are hiding behind another person. This suggests that maybe throughout the series, there may be something that may threaten them. - The use of the stars in the sky connote space and the sci fi genre. This shows that the series may contain some typical sci-fi conventions such as the supernatural, monsters etc. The night also connotes eeriness. - The character in the middle of the poster is shown to be slightly bigger showing that she may be significant throughout the series. This could also be connoted as she is positioned in the center. The other characters are seen to surround her suggesting that they may be protecting her. This is reinforced by one of the characters holding a weapon - the baseball bat. - In the background of the poster is a ominous figure emerging from a gated area with a restricted sign on. This could show that he may be the antagonist/villain. - The title shown on the poster connotes a retro vine as it is written almost like a neon sign which could reference the 80's. This could suggest that the series may be set within this time period. This is reinforced by the clothing. The writing of the title also resembles that of a Stephen king film showing that there may be some intertextuality taken from some of his work. - The clothing, bikes and setting suggest that the series is set in America. This is reinforced by the man who is in a sheriff uniform. The fact that there is a sheriff may suggest there is crime within the series. - The 3 boys are positioned above the title meaning that they may feature as mains throughout. - Themes that are shown in the poster include facing adversity as they are all facing the same way, ready to fight. Also, the supernatural which could be suggested by the centre character holding her hand out in a way that she may control something. Friendship is shown the close proximity of all the characters. - The narrative of the series could include binary opposition reinforced by the use of the two colours contrasting, red and blue. Also, the fact that there are many children included shows that the story may be from their point of view. - There is much intertextuality shown between the poster and ET with the use of the bikes and the moon.

Statement of intent

Statement of intent

The concept of my video is to show that the youth still have feelings and are not just thugs or emotional brick walls. They do get affected by love and being left alone, it’s not always the same on the outside as it is on the inside.

So I will then show flash backs of the memories at was good and bad. With these I can have some fun and create a pace with editing and the way the scenes will be created will show pace and emotion. Therefore, the pace will have a upbeat speed to fit the dance genre.

This video will attract the audience if 18-25 years old as they are construed as just partying young adults that are looking for trouble and therefore they can relate to the video, and show the emotion and feelings they all feel and have.

My video will fit into my company as my name is P.H.A.S.E as young people go through phases of different emotion and I want to try and pick them up and make them feel better even if it is just for the duration of the song and make them feel as if there is someone ere who they can relate to.

I will use mise-en-scene to create the pace, mood and set the scene for the song and its music video. I will use the dark lighting at beginning, so it shows the pain he was going through and get brighter as time goes on and therefore makes him seem a happy as he finds someone new at the end.

I will use my intertextuality from the music video by aha for take on me, I will use the drawing animation to involve intertextuality. Also, I will use the bridge scene from Skyfall as it matches with my lyrics.

The representation created from mise-en-scene will create a mood of heartache and serious emotion that youths do feel. Showing that they not actually all “thugs”.

I am going to use a narrative to show the story and the progress on how well he has coped and over came the dark thoughts. Then it will the contrast in emotions as you can see the feelings in his face.

I am going to use the spacy techno font to create the dance vibes of my artist, then the very boxy square layout to create a futuristic layout.  Then the colour scheme for on my website creates the image of what my artist is feeling now as it is black and red due to the pain he has felt and the black shows he is alone and isolated.

Also my social medias will help boost my profile and gain a big following and help get in contact with huge artists. People can relate on social medias and with my website as everyone is online or on the internet and creates a opinion through their profile online.

The synergy created by the social media and the website towards the audience will help forma  bond as they will really connect with the artist and feel as if they know each other.
