8 Ways to spot bias in newspapers

8 Ways to spot bias in newspapers

Bias pictures and graphics- camera angles and captions.   Can make someone look powerful if the camera angle is below them and make them look small if it is above them.

Text, word choice and tone off the body of the text.   If its informal they might not be taking the story seriously.

Choice of journalist and sources- who is writing it and their beliefs and who have they got their information from.  they may be against what they are writing about so would be  bias point of view.

Positioning of certain articles.  If the article is further back of the paper then the paper company may be biased on the article and try and cover it up if they support it and something has gone wrong.

Bias through omission or selection- whether an article is even published or not.   If something they support has gone wrong then they may not even publish the story.

Bias through headline.   Slating the article so people think that some thing is bad.

Bias use of names and titles- "terrorist" or "freedom fighter", "ex-con" or "someone who served a sentence a long time ago". The name changes depending what they want the audience to think of the article.

Bias through stats and crowd control counts.   The could use stats to boost their points and make them sound right.
